Although no two casks are the same, and therefore won't produce an identical single malt, the casks are carefully selected by Balvenie's Malt Master and feature a consistent, rich, spiced character, complimented by hints of elegant oak.Nose: Dense Christmas cake with icing, full of sticky, syrupy dried fruits, cherries, finely chopped nuts and grated nutmeg.
Keep the sherried stuff coming and we are just waiting for the cask strength Balvenie to be released. That would be perfect 10th January 2016 Full and deep flavors.... 19th December 2015 Approachable, very sweet on the nose, ozone post-match but no real smoke, citrus, ready for the tongue. The taste is superior to the nose, lots of sweet toffee with tiny hints of sherry cask characteristics.
Easily my top recommendation for an enjoyable dram during winter's short and frosty days. Touch sharp on the tongue, familiar Sherry, touch too sweet, happily bitter but not overwhelming, fresh nutmeg. However the mouth feel is fizzy, yeasty, bordering on carbonated.
Basically that's the case with any single barrel which is as it's name implies. Solid leathery mouthfeel with the hint of sweetness given by the sherry. Not sure if those reviews just had different expectations or if the consistency is poor.
And incidentally In the whisky bible the cask that was rated was that very cask number with 95 points.......! 22nd October 2014 I was lucky to find 3 bottles of this all from different casks at an Asda store in the North East for £35 a bottle I have had bottles of this before and it is always a very superior whisky mellow sweet full flavoured a delight to open every bottle.never be as lucky again to obtain whisky as good as this at £35 2nd October 2014 I find it hard to believe that David Stewart picked this cask. It must be a 2nd or 3rd fill sherry cask because it seems the best has already been extracted.
Lingers, too sweet, but makes a good dessert before bed. The finish is not long, at first the toffee lingers but that is soon replaced by an old wood feel. 20th September 2014 First, not sure every cask is the same, however, I opened my first bottle last night and what a tremendous surprise. All of the sweet notes you would expect from a well done sherried scotch.
